The devastating introduction of pike to Lake Davis required swift action by the authorities. In 2007, they poisoned Davis to eradicate the invasive species. These efforts proved to be highly successful, and today, Lake Davis is considered one of the premier trout fisheries in the state. The lake boasts lush weed beds and a wealth of insect hatches, contributing to remarkably healthy brown and rainbow trout (size and vigor to prove it).
Lake Davis is relatively shallow, with an average depth of only 21 feet. In the spring and early summer, rainbows can be seen cruising the shallows in search of midge, damsel, and caddis hatches. During this period, fly fishing or casting from the shore can be particularly productive. However, the warmer temperatures of late summer typically drive the fish to cooler, deeper waters, making trolling in the deeper channels most effective. The browns follow a similar pattern but often remain shallower longer as the water warms.
A decent largemouth bass bite picks up during the summer, and brown bullhead are also available.
Beyond fishing, Lake Davis offers a variety of recreational activities, including camping, swimming, and mountain biking. A big positive for anglers is the prohibition of water skis and jet skis, as it tempers lake activity and noise throughout the year.
