Spotted bass have become the dominant bass species at Bullard Bar. They typically out-forage their largemouth and smallmouth counterparts, leading high numbers and trophy size. The bigger spots tend to reside in cooler, deeper waters and are most effectively targeted with lures that mimic their preferred prey: kokanee salmon. For anglers more interested in quantity rather quality, the shallows around structure can yield plenty of action.

Kokanee salmon fishing in Bullards can be exceptional when the conditions are right. The population remains strong due to annual fingerling stockings. Most kokanee are around 12 inches long, though many can grow to 2-3 pounds. Trolling in the spring is ideal for finding these fish in the shallower depths of 30-40 feet. However, the summer's heat typically forces schools deeper, up to 100 feet.

Rainbow and brown trout are also present in Bullards Bar. While their numbers might not be as vast, their average size can make them worth the effort. The CDFW typically plants rainbows throughout the colder season. Many anglers prefer fishing the nearby Yuba River over Bullards Bar for more but smaller trout. For those with patience who are committed to the lake though, trophies await.

Bullards Bar also hosts decent warm water fishing for bluegill, crappie, and catfish.

The bass bite has improved over the past couple of weeks. Fish are stacking along steep rock walls and deeper ledges, especially on the main lake. Late mornings have been best as the sun warms the shoreline rock. It’s still is a bit of a slow grind at times, but small jigs and soft plastics are pulling better numbers than earlier in the month.

6 Spotted Bass
Sunny with Light Breeze
Slightly Stained

Fished it on a kayak and had decent luck. Landed about six spotted, one on a nightcrawler, two on a rapala while trolling at 2 mph, and the rest (including a decent-sized fella) on bottom using a Z-man hula stickz with a ned rig. This was my first time using the Hula Stickz, and I am now a fan. A wonderful lake, will be back.
