Stationed high in the eastern Sierras at an elevation nearing 6,000 feet, Stampede Reservoir emerges as a haven for vacationers, nature enthusiasts, and most notably, anglers. This serene destination is renowned for its kokanee fishing, but those in the know are aware of the superb mackinaw, trout, and smallmouth bass fishing as well.

Mid-spring is typically when the kokanee fishery begins. Stampede Reservoir ices over during the winter, and when the ice melts, kokanee fishing heats up. Trolling shallow is optimal early in the season as the weather and water temperature remain cold. However, as temperatures increase, kokanee schools gravitate to the depths, often holding between 50 to 60 feet. This is when a fish-finder and downrigger become invaluable tools.

Mackinaw and brown trout are the primary aquatic predators at Stampede. They feed on the fingerling kokanee and smaller rainbow trout, so following kokanee schools or fishing near trout stocking spots can be quite the strategic move. Mackinaw and brown trout are both plentiful and big, so plan your gear accordingly.

Rainbow trout are stocked yearly and provide plenty of action for shore anglers. The hard fighting smallmouth bass fishery can also be very good, especially in the warmer months. Try the dam or any rocky outcroppings.

With campgrounds, boat ramps, and easy shore access, Stampede Reservoir provides convenience for not only anglers, but families as well. Quick tip, stay up on lake water levels if bringing a boat.

Snow has melted and Stampede is finally open to the public. Kokanee action is kicking off nicely, although mostly for smaller fish (inline with the end of last year). Late last fall, anglers were hoping these kokanee would grow over winter, but no evidence of that yet. Nothing over 14 inches.
