Lake Temescal Fishing Overview

Water Description

Lake Temescal is a small reservoir in the Oakland hills covering just 18 acres. This charming lake is the focal point of Temescal Regional Park and offers a quick refuge from the city. Both East Bay Parks and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) frequently stock Lake Temescal with trout. Given its modest size, the lake reacts swiftly to these stock efforts. However, these stocked rainbows are rapidly caught, either by eager anglers or local cormorants. So if you aim to catch limits, it's crucial to fish close to the stocking...

So if you aim to catch limits, it's crucial to fish close to the stocking dates.

Beyond trout, Lake Temescal hosts other warm-water fish such as largemouth bass, redear sunfish, bluegill, and catfish.

Boats are not permitted and fishing is limited to the shoreline, which ensures the lake remains peaceful and tranquil. For those who fancy a break from fishing, Lake Temescal also offers picnic spots and a grassy lawn, perfect for unwinding amidst nature's beauty.

Temescal rainbow action is holding up better than expected for mid-June. Trout are still in play, especially early or late in the day, with deeper water near the dam dock and the far-side point producing best. The cooler weather gave the bite a short boost, and a few lightning trout are being caught, including a 9-pounder reported by one of our members. Not a numbers game, but they’re still there.

Bass action is spotty. Mostly 1- to 2-pound fish are coming on drop-shot Roboworms, jerkbaits, and swimbaits worked tight to cover. A 6-pounder was pulled in the evening last week. There’s a decent algae bloom starting, which makes for tough, clean casting.
