Lake Amador is kicking out some quality trout, with several heavyweights showing up this past week. A few massive Amagolds, well over 10 pounds, were landed on crappie jigs and minnow plugs. Bank anglers are finding good action near the dam and spillway with PowerBait and small jigs, while trollers working the Jackson Creek arm are picking up quality fish on Speedy Shiners. The lake received another hefty plant of cutbows last week, so there’s plenty of trout to target. Water levels are creeping up, but recent rain has left the clarity somewhat stained, especially near the dam where debris is stacking up. Water temps are holding around 52 degrees.
Lake Amador has begun its weekly stockings of Donaldson Rainbows, Amador Golden Rainbows, Cutbows, Amador Blue Rainbows, and Golden Cutbows from its trout farm. Lake Amador has begun its weekly stockings of Donaldson Rainbows, Amador Golden Rainbows, Cutbows, Amador Blue Rainbows, and Golden Cutbows from its trout farm. Currently, the bite has been best for bank anglers using PowerBait, nightcrawlers, or small jigs. Boaters are also catching fish, as the boat launch remains open for now (this could change quickly due to the recent golden mussel scare). However, only 30 boats are allowed to launch daily to limit pressure from boaters affected by closures at nearby Camanche.
May 31 marked the final trout stocking of the season, and two weeks later, the bite remains strong. As the water temperature increases, trollers are targeting fish at deeper depths, currently ranging from 30 to 50 feet, using spoons and Rapalas. While the trout season is gradually coming to an end, bass and catfish fishing should pick up shortly.
