Situated in the Sierra Nevada foothills, Lake Camanche is renowned for its top-quality bass and trout fishing. Though conveniently located near the Stockton and Lodi metropolitan areas, it retains the charm of a wild and scenic destination.
Lake Camanche's diverse underwater terrain features rocks, sunken trees, old mines, bridges, and dense weed beds. Large Florida strain largemouth bass roam these areas, particularly eager to feed on schools of threadfin shad during the spring and summer. While spotted bass are abundant, the smallmouth bass population remains limited.
The rainbow trout fishery at Camanche is equally noteworthy. Thousands of pounds of rainbow trout are stocked annually, with trophy catches weighing up to 15 pounds. It's not uncommon to catch trout weighing around 5 pounds. Anglers primarily use two methods for catching these rainbows: trolling spinners or spoons in deeper channels or casting nightcrawlers, grubs, or red worms from the shore.
Other species at the lake include catfish, kokanee, crappie, bluegill, and sunfish. The pond at the South Shore Campground offers an ideal spot for children to enjoy trout fishing. Please note that there's a fee to fish at Lake Camanche, which supports their comprehensive private trout stocking program.
