With premier largemouth fishing in the late spring and an abundance of striped bass in the summer and fall, New Hogan Lake ranks among the top warm-water fishing destinations in the state.
The true highlight of New Hogan is its thriving striped bass fishery, with fish ranging up to 20 pounds, and the occasional trophy catch upwards of 30+ pounds. The period from mid-summer through fall is particularly noteworthy; during this time large schools of stripers push shad to the water's surface, creating massive boils that are hard to miss. Anglers must often "match the hatch" at this time, as the stripes can narrow their focus to the style/size of shad and won't consider anything else. When shad schools aren’t as prevalent, trolling stick-baits or jigging spoons can result in solid yields.
For many anglers, New Hogan Lake's reputation centers on largemouth bass fishing. Early in spring, largemouth anglers find the most action, width some landing absolute giants. For reference, the lake's record for largemouth bass stands at 13 lb 13 oz.
Trout aren’t stocked anymore, and most of the remaining trout have become prey for bass and stripers.
The lake also offers a bluegill and crappie fishery, with the lake-record crappie weighing in at over 3 pounds.
During the summer months, navigating waterskiing traffic can pose challenges. However, anglers can find serene fishing spots in the lake's arms and towards the southern end.
- Striped Bass: 31.5 lb
- Largemouth Bass: 13 lb 13 oz (2019)
