Santa Fe Reservoir Fishing Overview

Water Description

Sante Fe Reservoir is surrounded by the beautiful Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area, which hosts a myriad of activities for families and outdoor enthusiasts. Needless to say, the area can get quite busy, and this does put stress on the fishery. Fishing can still be very good, but the bite can shut off entirely during crowded weekends. Rainbow trout are stocked in the winter, while the warmer months host a solid largemouth bass bite. Many anglers also find success fishing for both flathead and channel catfish during the hot summer evenings.

CDFW stocked again last week following an early March plant, and the trout bite has stayed consistent. Anglers are hooking up on mini jigs, small swimbaits, PowerBait, and floated nightcrawlers. Nothing huge, but limits are definitely happening.

Bass are waking up too. Smaller males are showing up in the shallows, staging for the spawn. Dropshots with Roboworms, wacky Senkos, and other finesse plastics are getting bit, but size is lacking—most are around a pound or less. The bigger females should be right behind them.

Bass action is slowing as the water cools. Most of the action is coming from very slow presentations. Drop shots, shaky heads, or slow-rolling underspins/swimbaits. Sante Fe has received two CDFW trout stockings in December so far. While limits haven’t been overly common, folks are still finding fish soaking green PowerBait, mice tails, and pink Berkley floating worms. A few anglers are also getting bit on Panther Martins and other small spinners. Most trout are 10-11 inches, with a few over 14 inches.
