Quarry Lakes Fishing Overview

Water Description

Quarry Lakes Recreation Area, located in the Bay Area, features three lakes formed from old gravel quarries (hence the name). The standout is Horseshoe Lake, which is regularly stocked with rainbow trout by the CDFW during the cooler months. It also boasts an excellent warm-water fishery, home to both largemouth and smallmouth bass, along with catfish, bluegill, and carp. Only non-gas-powered boats, either electric or manually operated, are permitted, with a modest launch area available. Horseshoe Lake’s neighbor, Rainbow Lake, is open for...

Horseshoe Lake’s neighbor, Rainbow Lake, is open for fishing, though it doesn’t receive the same attention or regular stockings as Horseshoe. Lago Los Osos serves as a wildlife preserve and is strictly off-limits for fishing.

Be aware that there are fees associated with both day use and boat launching. Additionally, the use of lead weights is prohibited at all times.

The trout bite has really turned on at Horseshoe over the last couple of weeks, and for quality fish too. Horseshoe received another Lassen drop last week, and fish are being caught all over the water column. Many have found success soaking Powerbait or micetails off the main peninsula in the deepest/coolest water they can find. But other anglers are catching fish shallow on mini jigs, Rapalas, and spoons... especially early and late in the day. However you decide to approach it, make sure to switch spots if the bite is slow for long, as they seem to be grouped up and on the move throughout the day.

The bass bite has taken a backseat to trout, but there's still some decent action on soft plastics and small crankbaits at Horseshoe and Rainbow. Most fish are running around a pound, with the occasional 2-3 pounder.

Trip Report
2 Largemouth Bass
76°F Sunny with Light Breeze
56°F Clear

Spring bass around the main dock on Horshoe Lake. One large school is usually around the main dock, feeding on the shiners schooling up there. Recommend live shiner on a weightless hook and just let it swim around where you see the bass.
