The CDFW rainbow trout stocking program provides lots of action on 12-14 inch fish. Folsom typically offers two different trout seasons, one in the spring and early fall where trolling is most productive, and another during the cool winter months where bank fishermen find the most success. Trophy rainbows are caught rarely since the stocked fish usually end up as bass forage.

By May, as temperatures rise, the lake's conditions become more favorable for bass fishing and less so for trout. Folsom is home to a robust population of largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted bass. These fish can be challenging to catch as they have seen almost every lure possible, so anglers must get creative with their presentation. Largemouths in the 4-pound range are common and 10-pounders are caught yearly.

Introduced in the 1990s, Chinook salmon are relatively recent additions to the lake. Now, the multi-year holdover population produces quite a few fish over 10 pounds each year. Chinook love the cooler water in Folsom and frequently hang out in the deepest spots. Additionally, a rapidly growing population of kokanee salmon is adding excitement and variation to the lake's fishery.

Crappie fishing has also improved at Folsom Lake in recent years, with a good population found in the North Fork arm.

Overall, Folsom Lake presents quality and varied fisheries. However, anglers should be ready to deal with the lake's variable water levels and recreational crowds, especially during the summer months..

The salmon bite has really been the standout, with guides reporting numbers and quality fish trolling hoochies at 40–60 feet. Trout anglers are running spoons and spinners in the 20-foot range and pulling limits as well.

Bass action remains excellent for both spotted bass and largemouth. Both are fully out of spawn, with largemouth now pushed under docks and thicker cover, while spots have moved off points and hard structure in 10–20 feet of water. Small swimbaits, drop shots, and Senkos are working best for both right now.

Good King Salmon bite

Folsom is churning out some excellent fishing right now for both spotted bass and salmon, as they both key in on shad. Spots are still in spawn and shallow. Many are on beds, but some are easing off into post spawn behavior pushing deeper and following shad schools. Still, most fish are sitting in that 5-15 foot range, hitting dropshots, swimbaits...

The King salmon bite has been good as well for trollers running Apex lures or Speedy Shiners in the 20-30 foot range in the main body near the dam. A few shore guys have also hooked a few kings heaving out jerkbaits and large kastmasters off points into deeper water. The king bite should continue to improve throughout early May.
