Lake Miramar Fishing Overview

Water Description

Lake Miramar spans a mere 160 acres but stands unmatched for large bass. The lake record at Miramar is a whopping 20 pounds, 15 ounces (although the story goes this fish wasn't caught, it was found dead on the shore. No one knows for sure). Miramar is stocked yearly with rainbow trout, serving as a near-perfect food source for trophy bass. The hold-over stockers that avoid becoming dinner can grow very big as well. Beyond bass and trout, Miramar is home to giant channel and blue catfish (lake record channel cat is 31.4 lb), as well as redear...

Beyond bass and trout, Miramar is home to giant channel and blue catfish (lake record channel cat is 31.4 lb), as well as redear sunfish and bluegill.

The shoreline is only four miles around, and while it is possible to walk the entire lake, fishing from shore can be challenging due to the widespread tule growth. Fishing pressure can be constant due to its close proximity to San Diego.

The spawn is officially over at Miramar, and water temps are now sitting in the mid-70s... but the bite remains very consistent. Water levels are up, and there's plenty of cover around the edges of the lake. Fish are holding in tules, under docks, and pushing out to points in slightly deeper water. With the water running very clear right now, finesse and light line are the way to go. Anglers are pitching Senkos and Texas-rigged worms right into the tules and pulling out some solid 2-3 pound fish. Dropshots are getting good numbers, though most fish are around a pound. Miramar has a reputation for big bass, and while the fish are there, the top end right now seems to be peaking around 4 pounds.

Plenty of anglers are sight fishing the shoreline with T-rigged worms or small jigs... some good 2-3 pounders have come this way. Other folks chasing a bigger bite are throwing Beaver style baits into the tules, and hooking into some bigger females. Overall, fish are being picked up all over the lake, but the common thread is slow worked soft plastics. Not much reported success on reaction baits.
