Weather is clear, and water temps have dipped into the low 40s at Eagle Lake. With it has come some excellent fishing for this lake’s unique and highly sought-after strain of rainbow trout. Fish have pushed to the top of the water column, with trout up to 5 pounds reported last week from 20 feet up to the surface. Orange has been the hot color, with grubs, trolling flies, and spoons in bright orange doing best.

Eagle Lake’s trout bite is split between two different approaches right now... one for numbers, the other for size. Trollers working the top 10–20 feet are picking off plenty of 14–16 inch planters, especially on the east and west sides. Bright spoons like red/chrome, red/gold, and hot orange are doing most of the work.

But the better quality fish (3 to 5 pounders) are coming on the fly. Anglers are anchoring over shallow rock piles on the west side and nymphing a foot off bottom. Leeches, midges are working well. Water temps are hovering around 64°F, so the fly bite should stay productive through June unless things warm up too fast.
