Eagle Lake Fishing Overview

Water Description

Eagle Lake, located above Susanville, California, is globally celebrated for its distinct strain of rainbow trout, adapted to the lake's high alkalinity. This strain is conditioned to be more resilient and robust than other trout species. They fight harder and taste better than any trout in the state.

Eagle Lake features a notable average catch size of around 16-17 inches, and four and five-pounders are commonplace. It typically takes a fish of six pounds or more to even turn heads among local anglers.

Fishing in colder months is best. Aiming to get on the water at daybreak is a smart move, as heavy winds often pick up in late-morning/early-afternoon, making boating and fishing quite difficult.

Snow and icy conditions this week are limiting many boaters from hitting the water. Shore casters are still pulling quality eagle trout soaking Powerbait and inflated night crawlers. Access will only get tougher with single-digit temps and snow in the forecast. Marina store is closed until spring.

The bite at Eagle Lake has been strong, especially in the mornings, though it slows as the day goes on. The lake is full of bait, with trout following these bait balls into shallower waters, around 20-30 feet. Spoons and Humdingers are landing fish up to 5 pounds, all looking chunky and healthy. The bite will only improve as fall approaches.
