Eagle Lake Fishing Overview

Water Description

Eagle Lake, located above Susanville, California, is globally celebrated for its distinct strain of rainbow trout, adapted to the lake's high alkalinity. This strain is conditioned to be more resilient and robust than other trout species. They fight harder and taste better than any trout in the state. Eagle Lake features a notable average catch size of around 16-17 inches, and four and five-pounders are commonplace. It typically takes a fish of six pounds or more to even turn heads among local anglers. Fishing in colder months is best. Aiming...

Eagle Lake features a notable average catch size of around 16-17 inches, and four and five-pounders are commonplace. It typically takes a fish of six pounds or more to even turn heads among local anglers.

Fishing in colder months is best. Aiming to get on the water at daybreak is a smart move, as heavy winds often pick up in late-morning/early-afternoon, making boating and fishing quite difficult.

Fly anglers have been most affected by the rising water temps... fish are moving away from shallow rocky areas that produced well earlier this month.

Trip Report
Trout
80°F Showers with Light Breeze
73°F Stained

Trout fishing has been very good if and when you locate the fish. Water temps have been in the mid 70’s by afternoon so trolling with a lead core set up including at least 60’ of leader - 2 colors in the AM and 4-5 colors as the day heats up was the ticket. We limited yesterday afternoon in 20 minutes with gold/red Thomas Buoyant lures.
