Lake Almanor Fishing Overview

Water Description

Many years ago, living on a lake was relegated back to the poor and destitute, who had small shanty shacks along shorelines. Boats were often old, beaten down with motors that burned more oil than fuel. Today, the narrative has shifted dramatically, and Lake Almanor stands as a testament to this change. Boasting plush vacation homes and upscale rentals, this expansive waterbody stretches across 28,000 acres and flaunts a 13-mile shoreline.

If you are a serious bass angler, Lake Almanor might not be your paradise. Largemouth bass catches are rare, although smallmouth bass activity tends to spike under warmer conditions.

The primary allure for Lake Almanor anglers lies in the pursuit of trout and landlocked salmon. The officially recorded brown trout from this lake weighs in at a substantial 16 pounds. But keep the term 'official' in mind—a local angler once snagged, documented, and then released a 24-pounder. But it was not measured/weighed in an ‘official’ capacity. Meanwhile, rainbow trout are abundant, with the record nearing an impressive 10 lbs.

Over recent years, the stocking of chinook salmon fingerlings has been notable. So there's plenty of salmon in the lake. Catching them is not so easy, though. Open-water trolling is the ticket, as the salmon typically school up and hunt deep for baitfish.

Considering the vastness of Lake Almanor, first-timers might find its sheer scale a bit daunting. A wise strategy? Seek advice and tips from seasoned locals so you don’t leave with hurt feelings and an empty cooler.

Both rainbows and browns are moving up the water column feeding heavily on pond smelt from the surface down to 40 feet. Trollers are finding good numbers running needlefish, Speedy Shiners, and Rapalas either flatlining or using lead core line (or downriggers) to get in that deeper range. 1.5–2mph trolls have been most consistent. Shore guys are finding some big trout soaking floated nightcrawlers on a sliding sinker in the early mornings on the west side.

Almanor is still fishing well into December due to generally mild weather and conditions. Water temps have slid into the mid-40s, though trout are still roaming and feeding instead of tightening up in their winter pattern. Pond smelt remain the main driver, which is keeping fish spread through the water column from the surface down into the 30-foot range. The bite is increasingly number-heavy, with smaller aggressive rainbows showing up often and better browns and heavier rainbows mixed in. Trolling techniques remain the same as the last report... worms, plastics, trolling flies, and spoons in baitfish patterns. Calm conditions have pushed the bite toward slower presentations across the board, and anything rushed is getting mostly ignored.
