Set in the serene landscape of Shasta County lies Hat Creek, a 48-mile-long stream and tributary of the Pit River. This beautiful creek is a haven for trout anglers and a testament to the pristine nature of Northern California.

Upper Hat Creek is a well-stocked stream that caters to a wide range of anglers. Rainbow trout, brook trout, and brown trout can all be found here. With easy access off Highway 89 and streamside campgrounds available, it is an ideal location for families or weekenders. This section of the creek is typically stocked throughout the summer. While the creek can receive a lot of fishing pressure during this time, anglers who venture away from the crowds have an opportunity to catch bigger fish.

In stark contrast, the lower three and a half miles of Hat Creek doesn’t receive any stockings and has been designated by the CDFW as a Wild Trout Waterway. This section is predominantly for fly fishing and, true to its designation, is home only to wild trout. As such, this part of Hat Creek operates on a catch-and-release-only basis. The wild trout vary in size, with some reaching up to 20 inches. However, fishing here can be very difficult, especially during the summer when a high number of anglers are present. Only the most skilled and experienced fly fishermen are likely to have success in this challenging environment.
