San Pablo Reservoir Fishing Report

With water temps in the mid-70s, and the last trout stock in April, the trout bite should be just about over... although it's absolutely not. Over the last couple days, reports came in of anglers landing a 6 and a 9 pounder just out from the Marina. No specifics on bait, but garlic-scented Powerbait is often produces well here, cast out as deep as possible.

The catfish and bass bite has been fair to good, with catfish being better. No recent stockings, but cats are still biting chicken liver and garlic prawns late in the evening. Bass guys are finding smaller fish on soft plastics, but quality fish have been tough to come by.

Surprisingly, trout are still your best bet, even in August.

Since San Pablo reopened for the season in early February, the fishing has been excellent. Trout stockings have been consistent, with close to 10,000 lbs of Lassen rainbows reportedly planted already this year and more coming all spring. Big trout up to 6 pounds are being caught on everything from PowerBait and trout worms to floating nightcrawlers.

Now that water temps have hit the low 60s, the bass bite is really starting to pick up. Fish are moving shallow and keying hard on crawfish imitations. Jigs have been hot for the bigger fish... a 7.5-pounder reported on one a couple weeks back. Crappie are holding on deep structure and the bite is good. Bright-colored mini-jigs are doing well.
