Lake Piru Fishing Overview

Water Description

Often overshadowed by the grandeur of its neighboring lakes, Lake Casitas and Lake Castaic (where some anticipate the next world-record bass to be caught), Lake Piru may not boast of 20-pound giants, but it certainly holds its own when it comes to bass and trout catch rates. Circle March, April, and May on your calendar, as this is when the lake truly comes to life. Bass fishing during this time can be nothing short of extraordinary, especially during the early morning and late evening. It's quite typical for anglers to bring in five bass...

Circle March, April, and May on your calendar, as this is when the lake truly comes to life. Bass fishing during this time can be nothing short of extraordinary, especially during the early morning and late evening. It's quite typical for anglers to bring in five bass within an hour, with each weighing around 3 pounds. To increase your chances of catching bigger bass, use crawdads or trout imitations, since the biggers ones here tend to ignore anything smaller.

Lake Piru is also regularly stocked with rainbow trout, ranging from 8 inches up to a foot. These stockers, combined with a few large holdovers, create a thriving cold-water trout fishery - and they also serve as a food source for the resident bass.

It’s worth noting, the management of Lake Piru has adeptly balanced the needs of both anglers and water-skiers. Skiing activities are limited to the central part of the lake, preserving the serenity of the outer areas.

A final piece of advice for prospective anglers: the winds tend to rise in the afternoons. So an early start on the lake is often the best approach.

The best action isn't coming on spawning fish though, it's been mostly schooling bass chasing bait in open water and off points. Baitfish-colored jerkbaits and walking baits are getting crushed once you find the schools. Covering water quickly has been the smart play until you find them. Then it's about working that school hard until the bite quiets. Some finesse guys are finding fish on drop shots and t-rigged worms, but that action has been less consistent.

The bass bite at Piru is still producing good numbers, with swimbaits and finesse soft plastics doing most of the work and some early topwater action (Chappos) along the rocks. Jigs are sticking better fish deeper, but changing water conditions may start to shift fish behavior and patterns. A major drawdown began in mid-September as part of a groundwater recharge effort. The plan is to cut the reservoir from 39,000 to 15,000 acre-feet. With levels dropping fast and the rec area closed, expect limited access and shrinking structure options in the coming weeks.
