Bridgeport Reservoir Fishing Overview

Water Description

Bridgeport Reservoir, a lesser-known counterpart to the popular Crowley Lake, is a trophy trout fishery that stands out among California's mountain lakes. The CDFW stocks Bridgeport annually, sustaining its population of catchable-sized trout. However, the robust and varied forage options truly allow these trout to grow to epic proportions. The callibaetis, chironomid, and damselfly hatches are staple food sources, and Sacramento perch provide a heartier option for the bigger browns and rainbows. Bridgeport is fairly shallow for a large mountain lake in this area, with its max depth peaking at around 50 feet, so it can be vulnerable to dry seasons. A few amenities are available, with several nearby RV parks and a shoreline marina & campground.

Bridgeport Reservoir kicked out some impressive numbers this week, with Ken’s Sporting Goods reporting very good fishing from both shore and boat anglers. Trollers had the edge, pulling in limits with Rapalas, Kastmasters, Thomas Buoyants, needlefish, and speedy shiners. A few shore anglers tossing Rapalas also did well, but bait fishing from the bank was slower overall. That said, the ones who did score on bait were using pinched crawlers, mice tails, or nightcrawlers. Big fish topped out around 5 pounds, with plenty in the 3 to 4.5 pound range showing up throughout the day.
