Lake McClure is situated on the Merced River and is surrounded by a captivating natural landscape. Beyond its beauty, Lake McClure accommodates an impressive fishery supporting a strong ecosystem for many species.
A major attraction for anglers at Lake McClure is trout fishing. The lake is regularly stocked with rainbow and brook trout, and brown trout are added from time to time. While shore fishing with spinners and bait often yields good results, trolling the main channel might lead to trophy catches.
Kokanee fishing also has its moments of brilliance at this lake. However, consistent success with kokanee demands an understanding of their habits and behavioral patterns.
Bass fishing can be top-notch, especially during the spring and summer. Thanks to the lake's underwater structures, there's an abundant baitfish population which feed and stablize a healthy fishery for bass. In the spring, spotted bass, which have been noted as reaching over 9 pounds, are particularly active. While most largemouth bass are of moderate size, there are a few giants. By late July and August, bass tend to congregate in deeper waters, so anglers should adjust their techniques according to seasonal conditions.
The warmer months produce excellent crappie fishing for light-line specialists. Find a school, and you will be in for hours of non-stop action. Catfish, though not the primary focus for most, are also present in the lake. Using cut bait in the evenings can lead to double-digit catches.
