Formed by the construction of Parker Dam on the Colorado River in 1938, Lake Havasu shimmers like a brilliant blue gem, beckoning to anglers from near and far. Largemouth, smallmouth, catfish, and even rainbow trout populate the over 19,300 acres of crystal clear water.

These clear waters can make for a challenging bass fishing experience, but also offer the chance to sight fish for giants. Largemouth bass can be found lurking in shallow cover or basking on spawning beds during the spring. Smallmouth are smaller, though a bit more abundant. They are typically targeted near artificial structure, rocky areas, or drop-offs. It’s worth noting, bass fishing tournaments are held throughout the year on the lake. Those tourney weekends can substantially increase the fishing pressure, and drop the catch rate.

For those looking to reel in dinner, striped bass can be found in deeper water during the summer, and move into the narrower reaches in the spring, congregating around artificial structure where baitfish thrive. Lake Havasu is also home to channel and flathead catfish, and a decent crappie population.

Rainbow trout are occasionally stocked in the river above the reservoir. Some can be found in deeper water with current, although many become food for the largemouth bass.

Because Lake Havasu straddles the California-Arizona border, check licensing requirements as multiple permits may be needed. Boat fishing is best, but there are plenty of public piers and shoreline access areas available. Lake Havasu City also offers many opportunities for food and lodging.
