Northeast of Fresno and just outside the Central Valley foothills sits Hensley Lake. Hensley offers over 20 miles of shoreline dotted with a variety of sheltered coves and dramatic points, which is perfect habitat for largemouth bass. Rainbow trout, catfish, and sunfish also take advantage of this ideal shoreline layout.
Rainbow trout are stocked by the CDFW during the colder months, providing a very good winter fishery, for trollers more so than shore casters. But as March approaches, the water temperature quickly warms and kicks off the excellent largemouth fishery. The warmer and calmer the spring day the better, as the lack of wind allows bass to quickly move up to the shallows to feed. Springtime winds can be intense at Hensley, and bass anglers often retreat towards the northern end to seek protection.
Unfortunately, summer brings a huge influx of recreational boaters. Water skiers and speeding boats create wakes that often disturb the fish, sending them to deeper depths for relief.
Day use and boat launch fees are applicable. Campgrounds and picnic areas are available. Stay current on specific boating rules and regulations.
