Whiskeytown Lake Fishing Overview

Water Description

Whiskeytown Lake is home to two distinct strains of kokanee that make their presence known through their spawning cycles: one strain breeds in September, while the other in November. Stocking events occur only during lean spawning years, so the majority of the kokanee are wild, reaching up to 19 inches. Rainbow trout are also abundant in Whiskeytown Lake, especially in the early spring when the annual stockings occur. Brook and brown trout also inhabit Whiskeytown. The browns can grow up to 10 pounds and typically stay shallow during the spring...

Rainbow trout are also abundant in Whiskeytown Lake, especially in the early spring when the annual stockings occur. Brook and brown trout also inhabit Whiskeytown. The browns can grow up to 10 pounds and typically stay shallow during the spring and fall. In the summer, they dive deeper to chase schools of kokanee.

Spotted bass are another prominent species in Whiskeytown Lake. They group in rocky areas along the shoreline, generally remaining in 15-20 feet of water. These tenacious fighters are active year-round, although spring and fall tend to be their most active times.

Smallmouth bass fishing can also be productive, particularly around points and rocky drop-offs, although Whiskeytown's smallmouth bass don’t typically grow past two pounds. While largemouth bass are less common, they can still be caught, especially during the warmer months.

Whiskeytown Lake offers boat launches, marinas, and campgrounds. For those seeking more comfortable accommodations, hotels are available in the nearby towns of Shasta and Redding. Although there are public shore fishing areas, many charge an access fee.

Trip Report
2 Kokanee Salmon
60°F Sunny with Moderate Breeze
54°F Slightly Stained

Went out March 18th caught two 15” kokes at 8am 10 minutes apart. Using a 1 ounce weight on a slide rig, 6” wonder bread sling blade with a 6” leader to a pink hootchie and spinner on top, garlic shoe peg corn. 60 pulls brought the rig down to about 15-20ft deep. Wish I could’ve stayed on the water but I had to get home.

Spring has officially begun at Whiskeytown. Water temps have jumped to around 54 degrees this week, sparking excellent Kokanee fishing and very good bass action.

Kokanee are running high in the water column right now, and limits are coming fast. Many are pulling Paulina Peak Tackle spinners or Wedding Rings tipped with corn and garlic scent in the upper 20 feet, 60-70 feet back. The main body of the lake has been best.

The bass bite is starting to pick up as fish ease into the transition zones. Swimbaits and drop-shots are accounting for most of the action right now. With warm weather forecasted next week, expect them to push shallower and the bite to improve even more.
