The Eel River has a stunning 192-mile path through Northern California featuring a blend of raw terrain and lush vegetation. Its scenic beauty is unmatched by any other river in the western United States. Drifting the Eel is an experience like no other, especially if you land one of its prized steelhead or salmon.
As fore mentioned, steelhead and salmon are the most sought-after fisheries on the Eel. Salmon typically begin stacking up in late fall prior to heavy rains, resting in deep holes with slower-moving currents. Steelhead generally waits for the first big rains before starting their runs. Unfortunately, the Eel muddies rather quickly, so heavy rains can make it practically unfishable. Heading further upstream is a good remedy for finding more fishable green-colored water.
Ocean-run cutthroat trout also make push up the Eel, along with the occasional run of shad. Rainbow trout can be found in the upper sections.
While much of the river's shoreline is accessible, the accessibility largely depends on which segment you aim to fish. Fishing from a drift boat is ideal, so long stretches of water can be covered more quickly. Still, fishing the Eel isn’t for the faint of heart. Landing a couple of fish after casting from dawn to dusk is considered a good day.
Yearly numbers often fluctuate based on environmental conditions and human impact. Remember to be respectful of the fishery and check the current rules and regulations before heading out to fish.
