Pyramid Lake Fishing Overview

Water Description

Pyramid Lake, located in California's Central Valley, predominantly supports striped bass and rainbow trout, but anglers also target largemouth bass, catfish, and crappie. The lake serves as a vital storage hub for water flowing from the north. Smaller fish are introduced into Pyramid Lake along with the pumped water, providing a major source of food, and sustaining the fishery. Pyramid is stocked with trout bi-weekly during the winter. The lake serves as a vital storage hub for water flowing from the north. Smaller fish are introduced into Pyramid Lake along with the pumped water, providing a major source of food, and sustaining the fishery.

Pyramid is stocked with trout bi-weekly during the winter. Despite the challenge of striped bass predation... trollers and shore-casters (near the boat ramp) still catch good numbers, especially from late winter to early spring. It’s worth noting, shore access is fairly limited. While the main lake remains a favorite for many trollers, other areas can prove equally productive.

Striped bass offer a solid year-round fishery at Pyramid, with the bite peaking in spring and fall. Consistent striped bass action isn't the norm, but hooking one typically presents a vigorous fight from a potentially large fish. Stripers in the 10-15 pound range are caught somewhat regularly, and some have even weighed in at 30+ pounds.

Due to its proximity to Los Angeles, Pyramid can get busy with water sports, especially during the warmer months. Regulations and limits are in place for powerboats and personal watercraft to ensure areas of peace on the lake. However, the general advice is to avoid summer weekends unless you're fine fishing with the crowds.

Trout are still showing here and there on PowerBait and nightcrawlers, but it looks like stockings have stopped. Nothing to report yet on stripers, but the bite should be picking up here shortly.

Pyramid Lake got a fresh batch of trout on January 31, with 5,000 pounds stocked by the California Department of Water Resources. Since then, the bite has been very good, especially on the north end, where anglers are landing 2- to 4-pound fish on yellow mini jigs, chartreuse PowerBait, and nightcrawlers. Stripers aren’t wide open, but they’re still being picked off by anglers soaking cut bait in up to 50 feet of water or trolling jerkbaits and A-rigs off points.

With water temps in the low 50s, bass are a bit sluggish, but both smallmouth and largemouth are still being caught on slowly worked drop shots, and Ned rigs near points and steep walls in 20 to 35 feet. There’s also been a sporadic reaction bite on shad-colored baits. Catfish remain in play, with reports of fish taking garlic prawns and sardines. Crappie anglers are also finding small schools holding to deep structure, but bites haven't been easy.
