Pyramid Lake Fishing Overview

Water Description

Pyramid Lake, located in California's Central Valley, predominantly supports striped bass and rainbow trout, but anglers also target largemouth bass, catfish, and crappie. The lake serves as a vital storage hub for water flowing from the north. Pyramid is stocked with trout bi-weekly during the winter. Despite the challenge of striped bass predation... trollers and shore-casters (near the boat ramp) still catch good numbers, especially from late winter to early spring. It’s worth noting, shore access is fairly limited. While the main lake remains a favorite for many trollers, other areas can prove equally productive.

Striped bass offer a solid year-round fishery at Pyramid, with the bite peaking in spring and fall. Consistent striped bass action isn't the norm, but hooking one typically presents a vigorous fight from a potentially large fish. Stripers in the 10-15 pound range are caught somewhat regularly, and some have even weighed in at 30+ pounds.

Due to its proximity to Los Angeles, Pyramid can get busy with water sports, especially during the warmer months. Regulations and limits are in place for powerboats and personal watercraft to ensure areas of peace on the lake. However, the general advice is to avoid summer weekends unless you're fine fishing with the crowds.

Water temps are sitting around 74 degrees, and bass are still very active shallow. Senkos, dropshots, or other finesse soft plastics are doing well near most structure from 5-15 feet. Plenty of 1-2 pound fish, with the occasional 3+.

Oddly enough, a few anglers reported catching trout... crazy this late in the season. They were soaking nightcrawlers for catfish... hooked some nice ones but ended up landing multiple rainbows as well.

Pyramid is in excellent shape right now, and the bite should remain hot until water temps push into the upper 70s, low 80s. This is when fish start pushing deep.

Excellent Largemouth Bass bite

70°F Clear

Pyramid is producing some excellent bass and striper action right now. Water temps have pushed right around 70 degrees and fish are starting to school up on bait. Bass guys have been hooking into some nice 3–5 pound fish (even a 9 lber was reported) on glide baits worked around main and secondary points. More consistent action for 1–2 pound fish...

Bass guys have been hooking into some nice 3–5 pound fish (even a 9 lber was reported) on glide baits worked around main and secondary points. More consistent action for 1–2 pound fish has been on the finesse stuff... Senkos, dropshots, and Texas-rigged plastic worms.

Stripers have been seen sporadically blowing up on bait around the lake, especially in the morning. Some anglers are throwing walking topwater baits and jerkbaits at these boils, but pulling mostly schoolie-sized fish. The better bite has come from trolling swimbaits or A-rigs around the lake with higher quality fish in the 3–4 pound range being caught.
