Lower river is transitioning into striper season but it's still early... mostly small fish. Steelhead window is wrapping up. Shad not yet, but should pick up late April...

Lower river is transitioning into striper season but it's still early... mostly small fish. Steelhead window is wrapping up. Shad not yet, but should pick up late April then peak in mid-late May. Probably another couple of weeks before the striper bite gets worth chasing... but it's close.
Roughly 230,000 steelhead were released into the Lower American River last month by CDFW just ahead of a major winter storm. Rising flows and turbidity will help push the fish downstream toward the ocean, where they’ll return in 2–3 years. The release supports both the local fishery and long-term steelhead returns.
The Nimbus Hatchery fish ladder opened November 7, 2025, and CDFW began spawning fall-run Chinook on November 10, collecting over 423,000 eggs that first day. Spawning will run through mid-December, with steelhead spawning to follow from late December into February.
