Bass are easing into pre-spawn, and while the bite isn’t wide open, it’s definitely heating up with the warming weather. Finesse has typically been the name of the game, with drop shots and shaky heads doing the most damage, although a few anglers are finding fish on jigs and even crankbaits. Fish are following baits for a while before committing, so be aware of delayed bites.
Afternoons have been better than mornings as water temps increase a few degrees (now in the mid-50s). Most fish are in the 1.5 to 3-pound range, although a few 6-pounders were reportedly caught last week. The better bites are coming from deeper water near submerged wood. Keep the presentation slow and consistent.
Bass action should continue to improve this week, but may cool off with rains expected next week.
