Laguna Niguel Lake just experienced a severe fish die-off, with thousands of bass, panfish, and other species turning up dead... unfortunately, many trophy-sized. The cause appears to be a mix of runoff, oxygen depletion, and limited circulation. Shallow water, heavy bird traffic, and fertilizer inputs likely pushed the system into an algae bloom, choking out oxygen levels. Without a strong aeration system to recover, fish across the lake suffocated.

The lake sits within a regional park managed by OC Parks, but no single agency oversees water quality. A biologist has been brought in, but any long-term recovery will hinge on funding and accountability. For now, the fishery is in collapse, with no clear timeline for rebuilding.
