Mojave Narrows will be gearing up with 1,315 lbs. of stocked fish, including lightning trout, hitting the water on March 7 ahead of the upcoming Trout Derby on March 8. The lake will be closed to fishing on stocking day but expect a feeding frenzy once lines hit the water Saturday morning. The derby runs from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., with anglers competing for cash payouts—$1,000 for first, $500 for second, and $250 for third. A fishing license is required for anyone 16 and up, and entry fees are $20 per person with $10 parking. Expect a crowd, so pre-paying and arriving early is smart.
Horshoe Lake was stocked with trout last week by the CDFW, and shore-casters are getting plenty of action on powerbait. Water is still a bit chilly for largemouth, but that should change with the upcoming warmer weather.
Mojave Narrows will receive 644 pounds of trout weekly starting November 22 through March 31 (2024).
